HH MIX #040 - PITTSBURGH TRACK AUTHORITY

Our 40th exclusive mix comes from one of 2012's breakout acts, Pittsburgh Track Authority. The trio of Preslav Lefterov, Thomas Cox, and Adam Ratana use a plethora of analog synths, vintage drum machines, live percussion, and a healthy dose of EFX to make beautiful organic dance music that doesn't sound immediately dated like so much of the typical plug-in house saturating the scene right now. Along with spectacular analogue live shows (and DJ sets), they have released on Further, Uzuri, and Argot, and run the labels Machine Age, and Love What You Feel, as well as their in-house label Pittsburgh Tracks. Their upcoming Strenf EP will be released on Work Them Records later this year.

In recent months they have made a number of tracks available to download so we asked them if they were up for us re-hosting them for a limited amount of time. Get them while they're hot.

Featuring MARTYN

Dutch bass advocate Martyn provides the second offering on Steffi's Dolly Dubs label. A-side track 'Oceania' has real space to it, incorporating breaksy rhythms and deep dubby delays reminiscent of his 2007-8 Apple Pips and 3024 releases. Personal favourite 'Newspeak' on the other hand has a strong bassline presence and bongo inspired grooves. 'What is room 101' incorporates sliding airy chords and shuffled hi-hats to round of the EP, which should be released on February 4th via Juno.

Newspeak EP - Martyn [Dolly Dubs]

Saturday 2nd February sees Martyn headline the Horizon Festival Launch Party at Mint Warehouse in Leeds where we'll be hosting the main room with our friends Flux. Nonplus boss Boddika, Leeds duo Aartekt and our very own Joe Were and Robert Cary complete the bill. Online tickets available here.

Featuring BORAI

Bristol's Borai steps up with his first solo tracks, having previously appeared on collaborations with firm favourite and previous guest of ours October. Two original productions of his will constitute the first Tasteful Nudes release, a brand new label out of Chicago.

A-side 'Moonlight On The Malago' asserts that Borai is looking firmly towards the dancefloor with this release. Its warm bassline sits nicely in the mix, unsurprising since Borai has recently been working at Henry Bainbridge's Dub Studio. Perfect accompaniment is B-side 'Does It Bother You', tougher still and incorporating a tasteful reimagination of the amen break.

Hand-stamped white label out soon with a digital release to follow - don't sleep!

Featuring ALEX COULTON

After deadly releases on Idle Hands and Horizontal Ground, our most substantial slice of Alex Coulton so far lands on Hypercolour's vinyl only imprint; a strong first statement that comes hot on the heels of their justly deserved gong at the DJ Mag awards. 'Dance, Max' does what you'd expect, driving dark melodic stabs and woodblock percussion push through 7 minutes of precise dancefloor engineering. It's pretty functional stuff but with a gauzy synth-laden breakdown that hints there's a bit more going on upstairs.

'Submerged' takes me back, all the way back to 2008-2009 when Hotflush and Apple Pips were churning out these tucked techno x bass rollers. Coulton's take on the sound is beautifully executed with layered, reverbed dub chords and some restrained bass pressure.

On the flip, 'Function' is a skewed dark house number with swung high-ends, plenty of kick, clamoring percussion and those stabs that are starting to become Coulton's calling card. But outsider pick of the lot is 'Fade Realization', a chopped and screwed number somewhere between Autonomic and Arkist working with a heady combo of heart-stopping reverse washes, echoing chords and lean clipped rhythms.

Introducing O B IGNITT

The past year saw a number of notable releases from Omar S and the FXHE crew in Detroit. The underground techno producer is known for being an eccentric, (making multi-coloured ice trays available to order from your label's site is slightly unusual) and also recently collaborated with Gunnar Wendel (AKA Kassem Mosse) on the simple but effective Enter the Fog EP.

We know even less about the mysterious O B IGNITT, whom Omar has produced with once previously in the past year. On IGNITT's first solo release, Oh Jabba, we find two great cuts of futuristic lo-fi house and techno respectively. In keeping with an apparent theme of classic movies with his releases, IGNITT references Jabba from 'Return of the Jedi' in both the name of the ep and its label art.

The title track 'Oh Jabba' comes to us in the form of an 8-bit influenced melodic house jam. It's a simple record that has a subtle funkiness, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Please note that Juno has incorrectly labelled this release in the player.

Oh Jabba/Space Age Steppin - O B IGNITT [FXHE]

On the reverse, 'Space Age Steppin' is by contrast a more deliberate offering, although equally crunchy and lo-fi in approach. You could file it under deep-space techno, but its also oddly reminiscent of late '90s progressive house. It's the stuff that's meant to work in a club or warehouse environment, preferably on a great sound system.

More releases from Omar S, O B IGNITT and FXHE records are likely to surface in the near future. We're looking forward to what's next for the label in 2013.

You can pick up a copy from Juno here.

Introducing TRADE

Trade is the latest collaboration to feature on the She Works The Long Night label featuring the production skills of Blawan and Surgeon.

SHEWORKS005 - Trade [forthcoming She Works The Long Nights]

As it's a vinyl only label, we recommend pre-ordering your copy now via Rubadub before their all gone.

Featuring BARKER & BAUMECKER

Barker & Baumecker return with an EP full of cracking remixes taken from last years Transsektoral album on the Ostgut Ton imprint.

Remixes come from Blawan, Machinedrum, Third Side and Kobosil, all adding to the already high quality album. The highlight is the unmistakable sound of Blawan, giving 'Crows' a proper dirty re-rub that really has a fantastic industrial, mechanical feel to it.

You can already grab a copy via the Ostgut Ton website, here, with a full release everywhere later this month.

Saturday

Featuring JAY WEED

Jay Weed's follow up to releases on 502 and Grizzly lands on a label close to the heart of HH, 2084. The debut release for the imprint, spawned out of an artist management company of the same name, is a sign of great things to come. Sinister sounds all round on this one. Jittery, metallic and calculated vibes on the original show a real progression in Jay Weed's sound. Kansas City's Huerco S is on remix duties and delivers a low-slung shuffler of a track, descending into rhythmic chaos in the closing seconds.

Tunnel / Huerco S Remix - Jay Weed [2084]
