Leeds Local #005: JAMES WELSH

The latest in our Leeds local series is no newcomer to the music scene, having already constructed a very popular previous project. This time though he's solo and using his everyday name, James Welsh.

Alongside his day job of working in a studio in Sheffield, James has turned his production skills to a stripped down, slowed down, version of House, sometimes even straying into the realms of Disco. Normally a grooved out bassline is prominent or an addictive vocal loop or perhaps a little nod to the past, perhaps even a touch of acid. Most importantly, all of it's tight and crisp. Here's a smooth Hip Hop little bootleg which he's made available for free.

Real Hip Hop (James Welsh's Landerneau Mix) - Das EFX

Recent news in the Welsh camp is that he's had an EP signed to Hypercolour's sister label Losing Suki. It's a four track release, straight up original productions. 'Integra' has been made available to download.

Leeds Local #004: PASTEMAN

Matt Bridgewater, also known as Pasteman, has taken a back seat from the Leeds scene where he's been heavily involved for a while. He is one half of Cut & Paste and also used to be a resident at Bigger Than Barry.

This time out has meant he's been able to get in the studio and crack on with his production skills. Over the past couple of weeks we've seen a considerable improvement in the output and he's been gaining support from some big names. No news of any releases yet but we're sure these are inevitable. Check a couple of our favourites below.

Leeds Local #003: JAMIE GRIND

For the third in the series we welcome Jamie Grind, one of Leeds' most forward thinking promoters/producers. We caught up with him for a bit of a chat.

Tell us about you and your musical background...

I’ve done all sorts really... I’ve never played any instruments but I’ve been in various bands as a vocalist, and had a solo hip hop venture as an MC. I’ve dabbled with production in various forms over the years with different software but nothing serious until a couple of years ago... Not that I’d say my music is serious though!

How long have you been producing?

2-3 years ish, and had my first release on Infrasonics about a year ago – so still a relative newbie.

Your 'Footwork EP' came out on Fortified Audio at the end of last year. Have you any more releases lined up?

Yeah, I should have another one on Infrasonics soon, I’ve got some stuff lined up with Chicago juke label Ghettophiles, and a couple of other bits in the pipeline.

Footwork EP

Now let's talk about your night which is causing quite a stir. What spurred you on to start Modulate?

We just wanted to give some new up-and-coming artists the chance to play in Leeds. We try not to book people who have played up here before, to keep the night as fresh and interesting as possible.

Modulation the changing of key in a track - does this reflect on what you're wanting to do in the Leeds music scene?

Erm, yeah lets go with that haha!

Don't you wish that you could open the ears of those that frequent clubs like Mezz, Warehouse etc? They don't know what they're missing, especially when George Fitzgerald's in town!

That’s just the way it is I guess - the people that know about the good stuff will buzz off it, and those that don’t – will miss out, simple as!

Did you consider using any other venues, or was it Wire from the start?

Always Wire, no other venue has that kind of sound, or atmosphere.

What's next in the diary for Modulate?

On March 30th we have Jacques Greene, Machinedrum and DJ Rashad. That’s all we’re giving away for now, but the months following are shaping up to be massive too.

Give us a brief description of what's in your mix...

Some old stuff, some new... a bit of a mixed bag really, mostly tunes that work just as well at home as they do in the club.

Leeds Local #002: PHAT PAT

Bigger Than Barry resident Phat Pat steps up for our latest locals mix. For those that haven't frequented Barry on a Tuesday at Mint Club in Leeds, it's up there with the livest midweek party in the country. We played in March last year and walked away saying that it's probably the best residency to have. Crisp Funktion 1, hi-tech roof lights and an up-for-anything crowd. Plus it's usually rammed!

On other matters Phat Pat is part of the Cut & Paste Soundsystem who are all about bass-heavy party music, regularly hosting room 2 at Faversham for Metropolis nights. Expect to see some sort of collaboration night not too far in the future. Keep that hush though.

This demonstrates the variety in what he plays out, a mix from deep to popular, get it on the download...

Leeds Local #001: GSCRATCH

A new decade, a new mix series, why not?! Just at the end of last year you had a tease of what's to come with the 'Label Mix Series'. Here we have the start of an exciting project which we're calling the 'Leeds Locals Mix Series'. Having recently moved to Leeds, (for those that don't know, Leeds is probably one of the top three cities in the UK for underground music) we thought it would be a good idea to push the local talent, exposing the many resident DJs around the various clubs, pushing their nights/labels etc. Hopefully we can build a community of sort, maybe even get a little competition going for 'Best Mix'...?!

First one to drop is Gscratch who has recently been part of the launch of Smudge Music. He brings us a wobbly blend of American influenced beats with an end result of a nice Hip-Hop/Dubstep smoothie, guaranteed to get the crowd moving. Here's what he had to say:

"People can catch me at Vagabondz and Bigger Than Barry line-ups over the next few months as well as Rippa DJ sets with co-producer Wancho at 'A Nation Of Shopkeepers' supporting Mumdance on 28th of January and 18th February with Darkstar. Keep an eye on the Facebook pages for added dates coming sooooon.

At the moment I am working on music for fashion projects and shows, arranging and performing bespoke DJ sets for designers. With the label launched we are signing distribution and preparing for our first wave of releases from each artist commencing end of Febuary with free digital EP available for download from the end of January. There'll also be more mixes coming soon from the label and solo production work."
