Introducing HANNE & LORE

Steffen Neuhaus and Stefan Helmke collaboratively produce a brand of unique, disco-flecked deep house under the Hanne & Lore alias.

Their latest release, 'Blah!' comes from their own label Heulsuse. The pair appear to have their eyes firmly set on warmer seasons - the dreamy vocals of the EP's title-track are accompanied by the funkiest of guitar loops, the kind of which wouldn't sound out of place on a Soundstream record. Despite the vibe being bright and sun-soaked, there's enough weight in the drum track to ensure that this one works as effectively in the basement as it does on the terrace.

Blah! - Hanne & Lore [HEULSUSE003]

Second in line is 'Be Good', which adopts a similar feel to the opening track whilst being more direct in its approach. The vocals here are more sultry, the bassline is more grizzled and the percussion far more conventional in structure. As before there's clear soul & disco influences but where 'Blah!' seemed pointed towards sunset, 'Be Good' is more concerned with after dark.

The EP is rounded off with a pair of remixes of the aforementioned track. The first treatment comes from Andhim, where the mood remains very much focussed on peak-time. The vocals are twisted and warped and the drums are glossed in darker coatings. Finishing proceedings is the second remix, this one from 7 Days Awake. The tempo's taken down a notch and the sleazy slap bass of the original version comes to the fore.

Blah! is available at Juno now.

Featuring B.I.S. RECORDS

NYC radio show, Beats In Space, has been broadcasting weekly since 1999 and has since spawned club nights and a record label. Last summer the label expanded to include B.I.S. Records, an offshoot strictly for exclusive bootlegs and special edits, after radio show host and label boss Tim Sweeney took a trip to Italy. There he met DJ Steve, butcher by day and resident DJ at a local nighclub by night.

"This guy was the real deal. He was playing dubplates, vinyl, cassettes, and reel-to-reels. All special edits he had done over the years. I couldn't believe what I was hearing." - Tim Sweeney

Special Cuts #3 & #4 - DJ Steve [B.I.S. Records]

A handful of those edits and dubplates were recorded in NYC after DJ Steve appeared on the Beats In Space radio show and became the starting point for the Special Cuts series. The first 12" came out at the end of last summer and this month sees cuts #3 and #4 become available on very limited vinyl via Juno and Phonica.

PANORAMA BAR 05 - STEFFI

Following up from Nick Höppner's on-point delivery for the Panorama Bar mix series certainly isn't easy, but resident DJ and club favourite Steffi is more than qualified for the task at hand. The Dutch born DJ and producer is one of the clubs longest standing residents and she thoroughly understands the genetic build of the club's hard-to-define music policy.

Steffi's concept for the mix was to ask some of her favourite artists for exclusive material, thereby keeping the mix as contemporary as possible. She ended up receiving unreleased material from Fred P, Dexter, Juju and Jordash, and Big Strick. To compliment the exclusive material, she has also included one of her own unreleased productions. Steffi has always been a selector who doesn't settle for anything less than the best records she can find and this mix is no exception.

Doze - Endian [Electric Minds]

The mix begins slowly with a deep melancholic vibe throughout the first five selections and crescendos nicely with Fred P's ethereal cut 'Project 05'. Things take on a more urgent tone with Naoki Shinohara's 'Timeless' as we move from here to the next phase of the mix. Juju and Jordash provide the exclusive track 'A Stab in the Dark', which sits before a series of eclectic and disco infused selections, breaking up the mix nicely. The mix enters its final phase with Steffi's exclusive 'DB011' and really hits its stride, concluding with 'Latency' by Obsolete Music Technology as well as 'Juan Two Five' by Trevino.

This compilation provides a great impression of what Panorama Bar is all about. For those that have been, it's easy to envision people dancing around the small booth suspended by chains while the morning light seeps in through the shuttered stain glass windows as the mix draws to a close. In fact, the only thing about this mix that isn't like a night in the club is that at just over an hour it provides only a brief glimpse of the experience.

HH MIX #035 - BASIC SOUL UNIT

It is a pleasure to have Toronto-based Basic Soul Unit provide us with the next mix in our exclusive series.

For almost 10 years now he has released a solid stream of quality music on some great labels, including Ostgut Ton, Other Heights and Creme Organization. His most recent release really helped cement the high calibre of material that he has been producing with two stunning tracks for Boddika's NonPlus imprint.

Black Ice - Basic Soul Unit [Midnight Shift]

Born in Hong Kong and growing up in Canada, BSU was immersed in a diverse multi-cultural city which was heavily influenced musically by Europe, NYC, Detroit and Chicago in the late '80s and early '90s. This wide spectrum of sounds is represented well here in the mix which, after a little atmospheric palette cleanser, kicks off with some deep disco vibes and slowly progresses through to deep house and techno.

HH MIX #030 - EJECA

The name EJECA first appeared on our radar late last year after a couple solid EPs on HellZone Records, since then the Irishman has had a torrent of releases, predominantly in the form of remix commissions and compilation contributions. However, heads really started turning after his addition to the vinyl only Tusk Wax series in May. Around the same time BICEP ended their outstanding Boiler Room set with 'You', the duo's collaboration track with EJECA forthcoming on an EP out on Aus Music next week. As the relatively new producer heads towards a surge in popularity, we thought we'd delve a little deeper into the world of EJECA. Here are a few questions and a mix for your listening pleasure.

You - BICEP & EJECA [forthcoming Aus Music]

When did you start producing and what were your main influences as you were growing up?

When I was about 10/11. I got a DJX Keyboard, it was so much fun , actually learn't a lot of it. Had a wee sampler on it and all. I used Cubase with it but got too confused (I still do) then went on to Fruity Loops.

Your output as Ejeca so far has been somewhere in the house/disco domain, have you ever, or would you ever, consider producing any other styles of music?

Haha, I've produced quite a varied amount of genres. Trance, Drum and Bass, Dubstep, IDM, Techno, House, Garage. I guess I get bored quite easily, but in my opinion you can learn a lot producing a new genre for a while, even if it's miles off the standard. I always like making more 'concept' type music, I've actually made a lot of albums of stuff with IDM and minimal type sounds that not very many people have heard.

Can you talk us through your approach to producing? What does your setup consist of?

A PC, Ableton and a midi keyboard. That's what it has been since I was about 10. I look at computer music magazines like porno mags, wishing I had 1k to blow on a hardware synth but i don't. In Ableton I would start in the loop mode just chopping and changing vsts and samples until I have about 5 tracks (drum, bass, synth, pad, vocals) that go well. In my opinion if you have a good 4 bar loop that has been playing for an hour and it doesn't annoy you you're probably on to a winner. As I've always produced on my own I've had to do my own A&R, in my opinion this is key as if your don't really like it then chances are others will be the same. Another tip is don't produce when drunk, 99% of the time it's pish(ed).

I Got What You Want (EJECA Remix) - Jet Project [Extended Play]

Over the last year you have worked on a lot of remixes, is putting your own stamp on someone elses track something that you enjoy doing? How does it contrast with making your own original productions?

I enjoy remixing, really see it as a challenge. Compared to making my own stuff at least i know someone else will hear it so I put full effort into it. Usually I will listen to the original and try to see what I can fundamentally change which will add to it - that could be adding alot of swing into a straight/quantised track etc.

Tusk Wax 5 was a vinyl only release, whereas all of your previous output was only available digitally. What style of djing do you favour and where do you stand on the analogue vs digital debate?

I had 1210s when I was 11, then bought CD decks too when I was about 15, then sold the lot when I was at uni/skint. I now DJ off a Traktor S2, and I think it's great. As I've sort of used everything I would say do whatever you want. I just love the idea of playing a track out that I made 2 hours before, if I was using vinyl I would have to wait 6 months for test plates before i could play it. I really see no difference between timecode, CD decks and controllers, they are all just controlling binary data. I agree there is a nice natural sub bass off vinyl records, but this is no match for the on the fly nature of Traktor and controller where you can drop in new loops, edit, samples, tracks and pre-program your own effects.

Your collaborations with Bicep have been very well received, do you see yourselves working together again in the future?

Yes, we all love 90s house and garage so I can see us making more end of night rave hits, probably 2013 as we are both busy enough with our own stuff.

Finally, can you let us know of any upcoming projects or releases that we may not be aware of yet?

I'm quite busy getting stuff arranged for various labels; Extended Play, House of Disco, Saints & Sonnets, Needwant and Kolour. Keep posted on my Soundcloud and Facebook.

Thanks for your time.

Make sure you download this mix below which features EJECA's very own unreleased version of 'You'.

Introducing EJECA

We've been meaning to get this post up about EJECA since hearing the unmistakable 'Tetra' which takes Mary J Blige's anthem 'Family Affair' and turns it into perfect 120 ammunition. This track features alongside 'X Girl' and 'Pushed' on a vinyl only EP released by Tusk Wax which apparently came out on 16 April (according to Juno and is now out of stock!) however it is still forthcoming at Picadilly and Chemical.

Tetra - EJECA [Tusk Wax]

We were reminded of this release by the Bicep remix of 'Pushed' which is causing a stir across the world wide web at present...

Pushed (Bicep Remix) - EJECA [Tusk Wax]

We picked this up off his Soundcloud a while ago and it looks like it's not there anymore so we've re-upped it for your listening pleasure. It could do with a bit more variation overall but will work well in a mix or in the club.

Dropped - EJECA

We look forward to the Bicep vs EJECA material forthcoming on Aus Music sometime soon.

Various Artists - Vibe 2 [Future Times]

There has been both a proliferation of smaller start-up labels, especially in America, that are helping to fuel the revival of the 80's boogie sound and elements of classic house. Headquartered in the nation's capital, Future Times is a prime example; with a small group of internal artists releasing music under a variety of aliases (Beautiful Swimmers, Protect-U, Maximillion Dunbar, Rhythm Based Lovers) and gaining attention from across the disco-house sphere. Their music is a grab bag of disparate influences, and it can be easily heard in the wide-ranging Vibe 2 compilation, released in September 2011.

All 4 sides of the album offer completely different tracks each time, with little flow if listened to in order. Starting off with a scattered uneasy cut-up house jam from L.I.E.S. and Maximiilion Dunbar, we are assaulted with Tom Noble's 'Malaco', a slice of blown out analogue fuzz that sounds as if it were beamed from some Brooklyn basement in 1987. Alexis Le-Tan gives us some serious workout funk with 'Marathon Man', almost steel in its harsh drum grooves and military chant. On the other vinyl, Juju and Jordash's 'Musketache' is a lost brother of I:Cube's 'Falling'; both leisurely moving through a heavy synth space with 707's providing a background of low-slung beats. The always reliable Hunee gives us a good solid piece that is reminiscent of the previous 'Marathon Man' in its 909 and heavy breathing, but this track is more seductive in its approach.

Most of the pieces are moderate in tempo, but there are a few slower cuts on the compilation as well; Confused House delivers a DJ-tool esque drum machine jam, Steve Summers makes a contemplative synth piece more suited for home listening, and Swimmers & Gang gives us another 80's boogie edit to add to the slew of them (although it's still pretty fine). The star piece, however, goes to 'Volatile Memory', an ethereal work by Steve Moore with a drum loop hidden under layers of almost classical synth and distant choral accompaniment, with a lone high synth line rising up out of the ether in the latter half.

Overall, Vibe 2 is an excellent compilation from one of the better new American labels, and is a must-have for anyone who likes variation in their house/disco/whatever.

Vibe 2 is available to purchase on vinyl via Discogs or digitally at Juno Download.

Leeds Local #005: JAMES WELSH

The latest in our Leeds local series is no newcomer to the music scene, having already constructed a very popular previous project. This time though he's solo and using his everyday name, James Welsh.

Alongside his day job of working in a studio in Sheffield, James has turned his production skills to a stripped down, slowed down, version of House, sometimes even straying into the realms of Disco. Normally a grooved out bassline is prominent or an addictive vocal loop or perhaps a little nod to the past, perhaps even a touch of acid. Most importantly, all of it's tight and crisp. Here's a smooth Hip Hop little bootleg which he's made available for free.

Real Hip Hop (James Welsh's Landerneau Mix) - Das EFX

Recent news in the Welsh camp is that he's had an EP signed to Hypercolour's sister label Losing Suki. It's a four track release, straight up original productions. 'Integra' has been made available to download.

Todd Terje - It's The Arps EP

In recent months this Norwegian super-producer, Todd Terje, has made a substantial come back after not releasing a new, original piece of music for over 5 years prior to his Ragysh EP which came out on Running Back in April last year. His new It's The Arps EP is forthcoming on fellow native label Smalltown Supersound. This release is somewhat special as it contains the spectacular track 'Inspector Norse' which has been gaining much hype around the internet.

To support this output, 'Swing Star (part 1)' has been given away for free and is available below. It's a superb piece of progressive, melodic, upbeat music which could fit somewhere in the House or Disco area, on a similar vibe, perhaps slightly less "clubby", to 'Inspector Norse' - as mentioned above.

Swing Star (part 1) - Todd Terje

It's The Arps EP is shipping from Juno on 9 January and will be available digitally from the 16th.

Cottam - Deep Deep Down EP

Cottam has described his most recent genre-foray as “sub-aquatic acid house”, a direction evident in his two most recent remixes for Morning Factory [20:20Vision] and Pattern Select [Delusions of Grandeur], as well as his 10-minute epic 'Sunrise Sunset EP'. Indeed, his latest offering definitely lacks the disco chug of some of his previous efforts, notably his fourth and second release. That is not to say, however, that it falls short in many or any other departments- least of all depth. For those who want the floor-filling Cottam of old back, fear not- just expect the floors to be full of slightly more serious folk.

The intro of A-side ‘Deep Deep Down' is full of ominously contrasting bass-synth and cowbell. The floating and haunting melody builds before being rudely awakened by a soaring saxophone. It all kicks off mid-way through the fourth minute as the snare gets involved. I hope you brought your flippers... this is about as sub-aquatic as it gets.

Deep Deep Down - Cottam [Aus]

The B-side, ‘Twang’, has a gloriously menacing bass riff that combines to tribal effect with the hi-hats. Chicago vocals are a nice touch and the sudden changes in intensity, despite the absence of a decisive snare throughout, are very effective. It's a tough call between two very nice tracks.

Twang - Cottam [Aus]

This releases is available on vinyl from Juno and digital exclusively on Beatport for the time being.

HUSH THE FUCK UP (vol VI)

In April 2009 we dropped the first in this series, 35000 downloads later we're at volume 6. This time we've switched things up a little but not with the style of the mix, as usual, there's an eclectic range of different beats. Some gentle, some a little heavier, but hopefully you'll agree, all are a pleasure on the ears, whether it's in your lounge, kitchen, bedroom, on the road or in the club. Spread the love, tell your friends, burn CDs etc. Most of all, enjoy.

Scuba - Adrenalin EP

The latest EP from the man known to his mother as Paul Rose marks the latest in an ever-evolving succession of stylistic manoeuvres that have seen the Hotflush godfather effortlessly glide along the perimeter of the hardcore continuum. From his heady, sub-heavy early output (A Mutual Antipathy [2008]) to the slightly more percussive, UK funky-influenced moodiness of his sophomore opus (last year's highly-lauded Triangulation) via chunky teutonic techno excursions under the SCB alias, as well as the hands-in-the-air house with his Loss EP on Will Saul's Aus Music imprint - it's clear he's a man of many names and even more talents. Let's not forget the brash, belligerent 'Dance 4 Me' as Spectr on RKS.

For the Adrenalin EP he chooses to return to the aquatic guise under which he made his name (or one of them, anyway) although those expecting a similar return to the days of yore in terms of musical content may find themselves somewhat surprised. Scuba goes back alright. Way back. Before dubstep, before garage, maybe even before house. What you're listening to is pop music, plain and simple. And I for one am certainly not complaining.

The title track opens with the gentle pitter of vinyl crackle and pounding 707 kicks (okay, so maybe it's house music actually) as Rose gently lifts the filter on a myriad of vocal snatches. By the time that analog bassline surfaces we're firmly into fist-pumping territory. MDMA-drenched strings slowly rise along with a faceless diva's utterance of, what at least sounds like, “adrenaline”, leading to the mother of all breakdowns. That ubiquitous bassline returns after the drop, sounding a little underwhelming given the previous fanfare, but brilliant all the same.

Second cut 'Everywhere' is definitely the most pop-conscious of the three – synth stabs straight out of the GTA: Vice City soundtrack and a seriously jacking bassline joining with yet more uplifting vocals, saying things like “come on feel it” and “feel the power” - cheesy but in a good way. 'Never' is my personal favourite of the three, combining the 80s aesthetic of 'Everywhere' with the euphoria of the title track, especially around the 2-minute mark as the ferocious breakbeat meets the heart-rending string sequence. The aggregation of dancefloor potency and emotion in this particular track points to the likes of Art of Noise or New Order circa Technique.

Adrenalin EP Preview - Scuba [Hotflush]

It almost seems that having properly settled into his new home of Berlin, Paul Rose has stopped spending so much time in the big frightening downstairs room of that former Kreuzberg power station and perhaps decided to take a trip upstairs. And stayed there until Sunday afternoon when the shutters are up and the sun is shining. And then went home and wrote an EP based on this experience.

The Adrenalin EP is released via Hotflush on Monday 26 September 2011 - buy it at Juno.

Help me take away my sorrow...

It's now time for something which might have been missing at HH before, a few easy listening disco-tinged edits which hopefully the majority haven't unearthed previously. These have been hanging in the iTunes waiting for the right time to arise. Last night was our first night back in Leeds which ended with a very enjoyable 2 hour set in the top room of Stinky's Peephouse but it now feels like a Saturday, the sleep pattern is already ruined and the dark grey blanket across the sky is somewhat depressing. That all sounds very negative, the plus side is that these tracks have been helping get the mood sorted.

I Need Dollar (KRL GBPmix) - Aloe Blacc

Even After All (Guilt Trip Edit) - Finley Quaye

Open For Service (Hot Toddy Remix) - Crazy P

Summersun (Cadillac Remix) - Miami Horror

Perhaps there's beauty in the darkness.
