Introducing WOZ
Woz is 19 year old Bristolian producer showing some exciting potential with his latest tracks. The BPMs push towards the 140 mark but the riddims have a 130 feel meaning he falls somewhere near that new bracket of bashy-bouncy House being driven by the likes of Mosca, Seiji, Melé and some Dark Sky bits. Here are a couple of tracks, the first of which got him noticed by Mumdance!
Ultraviolet - Woz
He caught our attention through the Soundcloud Group with these two tracks below. The production and general vibes are much better than the ones above - this fits what we've said before, the best tracks usually get released. Saying that, check them all and make your own decisions.
Junky - Woz
Champion Bubbler - Woz
Keep your eyes peeled for this name cropping up more and more this year and stay in touch with him on Twitter.

Featuring KAPSIZE
KAP006
Artist: L-Wiz
Tracks: Straitjacket / 4.42 Oz
Release date: Feb 21st 2011 [Vinyl] / 28th Feb 2011 [Digital]
Buy: Juno / Juno Download
"Kapsize kick starts 2011 with 2 fresh cuts from a new label artist: L-Wiz. While L-Wiz is new to Kapsize, the Swedish duo are in no way new to the dubstep scene - drawing attention with killer tracks like 'Girl From Codeine City' and the classic 'Girlfriend', the production pair have been making high quality dubstep tracks since the early 2004-5 days, even launching the first ever release on Dub Police! It is with pleasure that we announce 'Straitjacket' and '4.42 Oz' find a home on Kapsize!
Keeping in the spirit of Joker's own melodic productions, L-Wiz take a different angle from their previous output - pushing layer after layer of perfectly produced synth lines in harmonic syncracy. 'Straitjacket' is the more dancefloor focussed of the two cuts, with a sleazy, low-slung take on the 'purple' sound we all know and love at Kapsize - while keeping it heavily weighted to provide bass fans with plenty of satisfactory rumble! Flip for the equally melodic '4.42 Oz' which takes a more relaxed approach in vibe, taking things in a futuristic direction while simultaneously referencing the past. Beautifully produced elegant music that you will keep coming back to.
DJ support from everyone from Plastician to 2562 as well as of course being a main staple in Joker's own sets last year."

Not enough praise can be sung for this Bristolian producer. Phaeleh is outstanding. His album 'Fallen Light' [preview/buy] was our favourite of 2010. Leeds Local #002: PHAT PAT
Bigger Than Barry resident Phat Pat steps up for our latest locals mix. For those that haven't frequented Barry on a Tuesday at Mint Club in Leeds, it's up there with the livest midweek party in the country. We played in March last year and walked away saying that it's probably the best residency to have. Crisp Funktion 1, hi-tech roof lights and an up-for-anything crowd. Plus it's usually rammed!
On other matters Phat Pat is part of the Cut & Paste Soundsystem who are all about bass-heavy party music, regularly hosting room 2 at Faversham for Metropolis nights. Expect to see some sort of collaboration night not too far in the future. Keep that hush though.
This demonstrates the variety in what he plays out, a mix from deep to popular, get it on the download...

DIARY DATES: January 2011
For those neurotics who have optimistically entered the New Year with hopes of sticking to an improbable fitness regime, wishes of exploring new educational horizons and the ever-repetitive declaration of learning a new musical instrument, put those recently purchased diaries and schedule notebooks to a more productive and less whimsical use by noting down our events guide for the upcoming months.
Vagabondz (with Zed Bias, Submotion Orchestra & Phaeleh) – Stylus, Leeds: 22 January
Vagabondz returns for the first time in 2011 with one almighty line up that in part plays homage to last years Outlook festival with The Bug & Flowdan, Kenny Ken and SMO, all of whom featured on 2010’s bill, presenting an evening of big Bass, Jungle, Dubstep and House. Check the promo video here.
Modulate (with George Fitzgerald & Submerse) – The Wire, Leeds: 26 January
Modulate’s first night of 2011 boasts an impressive line-up and an all-round big bass affair with George FitzGerald headlining the night at The Wire alongside Submerse and Doncaster trio Mista Men. Following his debut release ‘The Let Down’ on Hotflush Recordings last year, George FitzGerald has amassed considerable acclaim and support in the last twelve months for his amalgamation of house and garage melodies, draped over clipped vocal samples and 2-step patterns. His most notable comparisons are with his peers from Hotflush, Joy Orbison and Mount Kimbie with FitzGerald also becoming Orbison’s first signing to his prominent record label, Doldrums Recordings.
Towards the end of 2010 FitzGerald’s bootleg remix of Groove Theory’s ‘Tell Me’ triggered such pressing demand that it was released as a limited edition white label. With this and the more recent upload on Soundcloud of ‘Heart On Sleeves’ alongside further events scheduled under the producer’s own London club night, Man Make Music, 2011 is set to be an exciting and perhaps defining year.
Bangerang (with Congo Natty & Lil Silva) - Stinky's Peephouse, Leeds: 27 January
Congo Natty headline the largest Jungle-engrossed night of the month with support from Exodus and Lil Silva to ensure there is enough variety to keep everyone dancing until 5am.
Double Trouble Vision – Corsica Studios, London: 28 & 29 January
A wise man once said you could never have too much of a good thing. With regards to the monthly carouse in Elephant & Castle that is certainly the case, so much so that at the end of the month we are being spoiled with a double helping of trouble across the weekend. On Friday the 28th Corsica will host a showcase from Toddla T and Raf Daddy’s label ‘Girls Music’, with dub-veteran David Rodigan headling the bill, before the keys are handed over to Theo Parrish and AUS music for part two, with Will Saul and Ramadanman providing an eclectic array of House, Techno and Dubstep in the adjacent room to the legend from Detroit.

Leeds Local #001: GSCRATCH
A new decade, a new mix series, why not?! Just at the end of last year you had a tease of what's to come with the 'Label Mix Series'. Here we have the start of an exciting project which we're calling the 'Leeds Locals Mix Series'. Having recently moved to Leeds, (for those that don't know, Leeds is probably one of the top three cities in the UK for underground music) we thought it would be a good idea to push the local talent, exposing the many resident DJs around the various clubs, pushing their nights/labels etc. Hopefully we can build a community of sort, maybe even get a little competition going for 'Best Mix'...?!
First one to drop is Gscratch who has recently been part of the launch of Smudge Music. He brings us a wobbly blend of American influenced beats with an end result of a nice Hip-Hop/Dubstep smoothie, guaranteed to get the crowd moving. Here's what he had to say:
"People can catch me at Vagabondz and Bigger Than Barry line-ups over the next few months as well as Rippa DJ sets with co-producer Wancho at 'A Nation Of Shopkeepers' supporting Mumdance on 28th of January and 18th February with Darkstar. Keep an eye on the Facebook pages for added dates coming sooooon.
At the moment I am working on music for fashion projects and shows, arranging and performing bespoke DJ sets for designers. With the label launched we are signing distribution and preparing for our first wave of releases from each artist commencing end of Febuary with free digital EP available for download from the end of January. There'll also be more mixes coming soon from the label and solo production work."

2010 Christmas Dubstep Compilation
On the 11th day of Christmas, Hush House gave to me, one 11 track compilation!
We've trekked through the multitude of free music that's been given out recently, listened intently, scrutinised appropriately and in the end, whittled it down to just 11 tracks (apart from the others in these posts). We originated as a Dubstep blog and we're aware that many of you are avid Dubstep fans therefore, this is Dubstep only. Some of the tracks have been around for a bit so we've also made the tracks available to download individually, however, we advise this works nicely as a journey of sounds. Stick it on the iPod or burn a CD, no skipping and, decent speakers or headphones required.
