Featuring MOOMIN

Moomin has put out music with Hush House favourites Smallville, but releases a 3-track EP on his own newly made imprint Closer. The tone is deep and spacey with a real emphasis on intricate percussion and sultry chords. The method is a perfect balance of analogue machines and vinyl crackles from intricate sampling. Title track 'a day and a night' is the real standout.

There's a host of great releases by Moomin on Smallville and Aim, as well as mixes on his Soundcloud. It will be interesting to see whether Closer will just release Moomin records alone or look to release similar artists in the deep house domain. Either way, the label shows potential with a refreshing soulful release from the young German.

A Day & A Night EP - Moomin [Closer]

The 12" appears to be sold out, but you can download it over at Juno.

Introducing AUTOMATIC TASTY

While still in winter's grips, it's time nonetheless to start looking forward to the upcoming festival season across the UK and Europe. Summer vibes, warmer locales and great music are all on the horizon. Automatic Tasty's recent release on Photic Fields, entitled The Joys Of Departure EP should put anyone into a warmer mindset.

Automatic Tasty has come into his own as a producer over the last few years and has quite a few EPs and full-length albums already under his belt. His music ranges from IDM and electro to acid house, and this recent release falls into the latter genre.

The opener of the EP 'Winetavern Street Romance' captures best the overarching laid-back analogue vibe of the record. Perfect stuff for chilling out in the afternoon or at a festival by the beach. 'The Long Road Home' is a slightly deeper affair but doesn't stray far from the chilled out acid sound established by the first track. The last two tracks on the EP 'Thinking Out Loud' and 'Living Vicariously Through My Own Body' round out the release to similar effect.

The Joys Of Departure EP - Automatic Tasty [Photic Fields]

This producer has found his own sound with these IDM and acid inflected house tracks, and certainly isn't trying to conform to any popular trend. The Joys Of Departure is sold out at Juno but you can still get it at Redeye for a reasonable price.

Introducing POLYKICKS

Next week sees the hotly anticipated debut release from Tessela on his own Poly Kicks imprint.

Expanding on the breaks style he explored on his remix for Djrum, 'Hackney Parrot' takes you all the way back to the early sounds of UK hardcore but still preserves the 21st century low-end subs we know and love.

Turiya (Tessela Remix) - DjRUM [2nd Drop Records]

'Helter Skelter' comes from more of a Moving Shadow or Metalheadz direction but still maintains that rhythmic, bass heavy vibe we have come to expect from Tessela and really highlights his production skills.

Hackney Parrot / Helter Skelter - Tessela [Poly Kicks]

You can pre-order the wax from Surus right now, with just 'Hackney Parrot' being made available digitally from the 18th of March.

HH MIX #042 - SEMTEK

For the 42nd instalment in our series of exclusive mixes, we’re proud to present producer, DJ, label owner and upcoming HH guest Semtek.

Goons - Semtek [Don't Be Afraid]

Benjamin Roth has been steadily knocking out some of our favourite music of recent years – idiosyncratic house and techno that nods to the past (without descending into artless re-appropriation) and embraces the future. His excellent Don’t Be Afraid label has played host to Mr. Beatnick, Photonz, MGUN and plenty others, too.

This 50-minute mix he landed in our inbox encompasses the likes of Shed, Rick Wade, Aaron Carl and a whole host of treasures we’re looking forward to hearng on the system when he gets to Leeds on Friday. Lovely stuff.

Featuring NONPLUS

This week sees the release of the much anticipated Think & Change compilation from Boddika's Nonplus Records. With only a couple of exceptions, notably tunes from Boddika and Joy Orbison, most of these tracks were pretty much unheard until a couple of weeks ago and with such a high calibre line-up there has been plenty of interest.

Broken Patterns - Kassem Mosse [Nonplus Records]

One of the most exciting pieces actually surfaced on the first LP sampler called 'Broken Patterns' by Kassem Mosse which is joined on the album by another great track from him called 'IP Mirrors'.

Quivver - Pearson Sound [Nonplus Records]

Four Tet also provides the fantastic 'For These Times' which really is one of the album highlights while Pearson Sound's 'Quivver' is another masterclass in syncopated beats and dirty bass. With contributions from Skudge, Martyn, Endian, SCB, dBridge and Instra:mental as well as many others there really is no better way to see the direction Nonplus is headed in 2013.

The album is out today and is available digitally or on vinyl as a fantastic 5 piece boxset. You can also listen to Boddika's in depth interview by Benji B from last month about the album here.

Introducing BLM

Ben Micklewright aka BLM has arrived on the rather special club night and record label, secretsundaze, with his 'Sudden Death' EP. Although there's only been a handful of releases on the label, the output has been of a very high standard, and it seems they've hit the nail on the head with signing this one too.

First up is A side and title track 'Sudden Death', with the pounding kick drum keeping the track firmly rooted for use on the dance floor. The melody is unnerving and slowly creeps in throughout, giving way occasionally to a distant echo of bird sound which keeps that dark vibe flowing. B side 'Chemistry' has a slightly more hopeful aesthetic to it, with the vocal hook layered over a dubby, swinging synth. Ben slowly brings in the 303 but doesn't let it overpower the other elements of the tune, each working together to keep the groove going strong.

Rounding off the EP is 'Brick', its warm analogue sound and strong percussion being a prime example of what a modern take on Chicago house can sound like without being too stuck in the past. A subtle piano riff and a blissed out repetitive vocal sample break up the song nicely, rounding off a well-executed EP.

Sudden Death EP - BLM [secretsundaze]

[SECRET008] will be available from Juno and Chemical from 11th March.

Introducing PENNYROYAL

Untold returns, however it is not with new material for his label Hemlock. In fact it is his brand new techno focused label named Pennyroyal that is the focus of his attention at the moment. The debut release comes from J. Tijn which is due out this month plus we're told there's forthcoming material from Deep Medi regular Silkie. Here's a little preview mix from Untold to get you in the mood.

Preview: Pleasure Principle Festival 2013

Arriving very soon in April is the very first Pleasure Principle festival, a three day weekender formed by Glaswegian party-starters Numbers and Dedbeat.

On Your Mind - Deadboy [Numbers]

Dedbeat festival ran from 2001-2004 at a coastal UK holiday park, playing host to heroes such as Aphex Twin and Madlib. At the time there was nothing around really like it. The intention for Dedbeat was always to return in a new form, but with the same music standards. For Numbers this is another stage in their evolution. Since both crews met through Dedbeat’s festivals over a decade ago, the new association for Pleasure Principle has genuine meaning.

From Friday 26th to Sunday 28th April, Pleasure Principle descends on Newquay, Cornwall. The programme is predictably eclectic and oozing with quality. Expect to see firm Hush House favourites such as Levon Vincent, L.I.E.S., Move D, John Talabot, Legowelt and The Trilogy Tapes alongside many more of electronic music's freshest and most innovative acts.

Ferns of Draconis - Legowelt [L.I.E.S.]

The weekender takes place in Trevelgue Holiday Park, in a sprawling green valley and within walking distance of the beach. Accommodation is provided by on-site static caravans and camping, whilst there is also a wealth of local B&B’s, hotels and rental cottages in close proximity.

Dancer - Robert Hood [M-Plant]

Tickets are available from £115. Check out the full line-up and grab tickets at website. You can also find them on Facebook or at their Twitter. Don't sleep on this one, it's sure to be something special.

Featuring INNERSPACE HALFLIFE

Innerspace Halflife is a partnership between Chicago-based producers Hakim Murphy and Ike Release. The Windy City duo's first collaboration came out on Murphy's Machining Dreams label last year and can now be considered the beginning of a highly successful partnership with all four of their releases completely sold out online. Their latest offering, the three-track Post Industrial EP is an absolute delight, raw analogue tracks with real depth, check out the audio below.

Post Industrial EP - Innerspace Halflife [Latency]

The Chicagoans recently remixed Achterbahn D'Amour's 'Cardbox' on Absurd Recording's Acid Test series, dripping with deep and dark sub-aquatic textures their take is a perfect compliment to the original. Have a listen to the EP here.

The Post Industrial EP seems to be sold out everywhere except for Redeye where you can get it on pre-order now. The Achterbahn D'Amour EP is still available from the major online retailers, pick it up from Juno.

Also, keep your ears to the ground for news of an Innerspace Halflife LP coming out on French label Syncrophone soon.

Saturday

1st Birthday w/ Pional & Semtek

Has it really been a year since we commandeered Mint Club for our premier outing into the murky depths of Leeds nightlife? The answer, of course, is no – it’s been 377 days. But they say that time flies when you’re having fun, and we’d be inclined to agree. Five events (and a crafty hop over to The Garage) later, we feel as though we’ve left an indelible mark on the face of this beautiful city and to celebrate we’re putting on one of our best line-ups to date.

Pional (pronounced “pee-o-nahl”, not “pie-uh-nul” like we all used to think it was) crafts thoughtful, carefully considered house music with bags of Iberian charm and acute indie-pop sensibilities. His solo output on Permanent Vacation and Hivern Discs – in addition to highly lauded collaborations with fellow countryman John Talabot – tout a sun-drenched yet melancholy sound that’s been turning heads for a few years now. Think heartbreak and ecstasy by the sea. His rare DJ sets are known to combine the best in vintage US deep house with ethereal modular offerings from Daphni et al...we’re certainly looking forward to seeing what presents he brings to our party.

Modcast #115 - Pional

Semtek, or Cambridge’s own Benjamin Roth, has been running the acclaimed Don't Be Afraid label since 2009, home to Mr. Beatnick, Alis, Claws For?, Mgun, Photonz and of course his own inimitable productions. His is an esoteric take on electronic music that melds hallmark elements of house and techno together into fearful, gripping machine funk. As far as his own selections go, his recent Little White Earbuds podcast expertly showcased a varied palate for all things 4/4, classic and contemporary...we’ve no doubt he’ll be able to blow out those candles.

Boiler Room x Don't Be Afraid 50 Minute Set - Semtek

£6 earlybird tickets available until Monday 4th March, £8 after that. RA users can keep up to date on here.

Happy birthday to us, we'll see you there!
