HH MIX #029 - CUETEC

Next up in the series, with our second 'all own productions' mix, is Berlin based Cuetec. He loves all things deep and colourful from Jazz to Drum & Bass but this mix focuses mainly on slow, soulful house - perfect for the summer. When asked if he'd like to find another photo for the album artwork, he replied, "I like the cover artwork, as it fits somehow to my music that isnt always perfect". In this day and age with the dominant use of computers, producers' output is becoming too crisp and clean - music is art and it doesn't always necessarily need to be so exact, sometimes a little rough round the edges adds character.

Many of his productions/edits are available for free from his Soundcloud. We've zipped up our favourite 5 for you.

Featuring BEHLING & SIMPSON

Behling & Simpson are at it again.

Their next release will again be for Futureboogie in the form of another cracking EP and have enlisted the help of James Fox to top it off.

Work That Body (feat. James Fox) - Behling & Simpson [Futureboogie]

As well as the two great tunes featuring James Fox, the pair continue their rich vein of form with 'AAW' and 'Good Thang' which can only be described as a perfect accompaniment to the summer.

The EP is already out on vinyl and can be copped digitally on 11th June.

Summer's here...!

The sun rarely makes an appearance in England, when it does, we all like to think it's here to stay. Here's a few tracks to make sure are on your iPods for that next time you head to the park with beers and speakers in hand.

Try Again - Loki Laredo [forthcoming Assembly Point]

All That - Loki Laredo [buy at Juno Download]

Hafflinger - Lauer [buy at Juno Download]

Hypnotized (B-Team Remix) - Eddie Matos [buy at Juno Download]

Those aren't free downloads so here a few that are. Perhaps a couple are a touch on the girly vibe but, if you're chilling with girls, there's no harm in that.

2nite (Late Nite Tuff Guy Re-Edit) - Narada Michael Walden

What's Love Got To Do (Zimmer Rework) - Tina Turner

Got Somebody - Moon Boots

Let Me Love You - Andi de Luxe

CLR Podcast 168 - SCB

"It is Monday the 14th of May and today we have a new guest on the CLR Podcast. Paul Rose is best known for his Scuba alias which has yielded three albums since 2008, the most recent of which, Personality, was released in February. He's also the head of the revered Hotflush label, which has covered a huge amount of musical ground, from proto-Dubstep (Benga, Distance) to abstract electronica (Mount Kimbie, Sepalcure) via house and techno (Joy Orbison, Sigha), since it's first release in 2003. Originally the SCB project was conceived as an antidote to the characteristic broken beats of the Scuba sound, as was shown on the first SCB release, a remix of Scuba's own Hard Boiled taken from the album A Mutual Antipathy in 2008. The next few years saw the projects begin to converge, and by 2011 the two had almost become the same thing, with the releases of 'Loss' (as SCB) and 'Adrenalin' (as Scuba) both featuring a dancefloor-centric melodic house vibe. With the release of the aforementioned Personality album the Scuba project has moved on to a different sound, and 2012 also heralds a new direction for SCB with a much more stripped-down, direct techno approach apparent in a recent remix for the Last Night On Earth label confirmed by forthcoming mixes for Echochord, Convex Industries and Hotflush (all featured on this podcast for CLR). New original SCB material is due later this year on Boddika's Non Plus label and also the continuation of the SCB release series."

We're recruiting further...

Last time we sent out this message we were overwhelmed with the response. Here we are again at that time to expand. We also promised a new website but that's still in the works.

We're looking for purveyors of fine electronic music, no matter whether it's Disco, House, Techno or somewhere in between. Eligible applicants will be confident in written English and basic HTML, although it is not essential, whilist having an ear for quality newcomers or unrecognised releases. Purchasing music on the regular is a must, be it digital or, even better, vinyl.

If you'd like to be part of the journey, here's what your application should contain:

  • Your current top 10 tracks
  • Your top 10 producers/bands to watch at the moment
  • 100 words on either one of the tracks or a producer
  • 50 words on why you think you'd fit in at HH
  • Any other attributes you have to offer eg. graphic design, web development, event management etc

A few perks if you're not already keen:

  • Guestlist/free entry to clubnights
  • Press passes/invitations to festivals and product launches
  • Access to upfront releases from a number of labels and artists
  • Products and clothing from various brands, including our own
  • Opportunities to interview/liase with your favourite artists/labels
  • Worldwide recognition for your work
  • Your own email address
  • A reference for your CV

The more you put in, the more you'll get out. Please email contribute at hushhouse.net (obviously replacing 'at' with the @ symbol).

Introducing GUY ANDREWS

Brighton native Guy Andrews might be a fresh name to some but his upcoming release on Hotflush Recordings should change all that. In fact this is his third release following on from a debut release on Discobelle and a solid sophomore outing for Untold's Hemlock Recordings.

Stepping straight into Hotflush is no easy task but Guy Andrews seems up to the task with two serious cuts, 'The Wait' kicks things of with a foot-stomping, rhythmic A-side with very Techno influenced overtones while on the flip 'Hands In Mine' has that vibe that can only be described as the Hotflush way of doing House music that would blend perfectly with everything from George Fitzgerald to Scuba.

The Wait / Hands In Mine - Guy Andrews [forthcoming Hotflush Recordings]

All in all this is one of the solidest release by a relative newcomer on any label for quite sometime, let alone on Scuba's label. If the follow up to this is even half as good, we predict some big things for Guy Andrews.

The Wait / Hands In Mine is available on wax and digitally from all good music distributors on the 28th of May, however you can grab an exclusive test press right now via Surus.

Tuesday

Introducing EJECA

We've been meaning to get this post up about EJECA since hearing the unmistakable 'Tetra' which takes Mary J Blige's anthem 'Family Affair' and turns it into perfect 120 ammunition. This track features alongside 'X Girl' and 'Pushed' on a vinyl only EP released by Tusk Wax which apparently came out on 16 April (according to Juno and is now out of stock!) however it is still forthcoming at Picadilly and Chemical.

Tetra - EJECA [Tusk Wax]

We were reminded of this release by the Bicep remix of 'Pushed' which is causing a stir across the world wide web at present...

Pushed (Bicep Remix) - EJECA [Tusk Wax]

We picked this up off his Soundcloud a while ago and it looks like it's not there anymore so we've re-upped it for your listening pleasure. It could do with a bit more variation overall but will work well in a mix or in the club.

Dropped - EJECA

We look forward to the Bicep vs EJECA material forthcoming on Aus Music sometime soon.

Preview: Bloc 2012

Bloc has a new home for 2012 - it’s the London Pleasure Gardens, in the Royal Victoria Docks. Set by the water’s edge, overlooked by the monolithic post-industrial derelict buildings of Britain’s former glory, the Pleasure Gardens will provide Bloc with a home like no other.

On top of this, MS Stubnitz, a deep-sea fishing vessel that belonged to the German Democratic Republic before the collapse of Communism is being brought to London for the first time. She is 80 metres in length and weighs 2,541tonnes. A team of forward-thinking artists and engineers have converted it into a moving platform for the sonic and visual arts. It’s about to become the most exciting venue Bloc have ever used.

Monday

Featuring SKUDGE

Possibly the most exciting and hotly anticipated remix series on the planet is back for it's sixth instalment. SKUDGE006R sees Marcel Dettmann and Answer Code Request rework 'Man On Wire' and 'Wonder Stories' respectively.

Dettman reshapes 'Man On Wire' by replacing the prominent synth melody with a lower pitched growl, restructuring the beat and adding a healthy dose of hi-hats. This switches up the rolling groove from the original in favour of a hazier, almost hypnotic aesthetic.

Man On Wire (Marcel Dettmann Remix) - Skudge [Skudge Records]

Answer Code Request may be a less familiar name to many but the low lying producer more than holds his own with his take on the unreleased 'Wonder Stories'. Metallic twinges, ethereal synth lines and short gasps of breath make for an understated yet atmospheric b-side.

Wonder Stories (Answer Code Request Remix) - Skudge [Skudge Records]

No info on a release date as of yet so keep an eye on Skudge's Facebook for updates on that. In other news, Skudge recently announced that they have a release forthcoming on Nonplus. When Boddika took over the label last month he said to expect some 'very cool shit to be happening' , this is exactly the kind of 'shit' we were hoping for.

Tuesday

Clone Records @ Hidden, London

A collaboration between two exciting London promoters, Trix and Streets of Beige, is treating London to a night of house and techno goodness on Friday 11th May when each of the two rooms at Hidden will represent a different side to the Clone empire.

Little Things Like That / Bachelor's Delight - Untold [Basement Series]

Label boss, Serge, Genius Of Time and Gerd head up the Royal Oak room. Whilst the other room brings the sounds of the darker Basement Series, with Dexter, Untold and Conforce on deck.

Live from Panorama Bar, Berlin (August 2011) - Gerd

Clubbers now seem to seek discerning continuity as well as ample variety in their lineups and this tickets both boxes. Tickets are still available from RA, but don't hang about!

Monday

Featuring GERRY READ

Gerry Read is on blistering form yet again with his most recent release, Rhino/All The Time. The EP is his fourth on the Ramp Recordings sublabel Fourth Wave and is arguably some of his best output to date. 'Rhino' will leave clubs quivering under the synchronised stomping of feet, the kind of track that will lure all idle bystanders on to the dancefloor. 'All The Time' grows from a relatively conservative opening into an intoxicating mass of layered drum patterns and a tribal influenced vocal sample. Two outstanding tracks, check out the clips below.

Rhino/All The Time - Gerry Read [Fourth Wave]

The hand stamped clear vinyl was made available on 21st April to celebrate Record Store Day, there are only 250 copies worldwide so don't sleep on it if you want to pick it up! You can still grab it here if you're quick!

Thursday

HH MIX #028 - MRSK

Another short break in the series but we return with this very special mix from one of Stockholm's finest - Martin Skogehall, better known as MRSK.

Martin first dropped onto our radar with the From Sweeden EP, his debut release on Rush Hour. 'Black Keith' and 'Close To Me' nailed the deep, crisp, rolling dubby Techno we were craving and the next EP, vinyl only on Skudge, featured 'Twirl' and 'Pinkman' - two hefty, acidic grooves which cemented our love for this man's productions.

Black Keith - MRSK [Rush Hour]

Twirl - MRSK [Skudge]

This mix follows suit and is certainly a highly recommended download if you like your tunes with a bit of energy and that elegant acidic touch.

Featuring RICK WADE

Born from a Leicester club night, the Cooler Heads EP is the first release on new label Artful Division and is by none other than Detroit legend, Rick Wade. After a quiet start to 2012, Wade puts down two quality slices of deep, rolling dancefloor music with remixes from label bosses J Brooks & Cecil and also by Leicester regular, Höhle.

Standouts are 'Jai' which is a little a more raw with a bass line that really give the track some groove and the remix of 'Cooler Heads' which is a little lower in tempo but really adds a deep, funky twist to the original. All in all, however, this is a very strong first release for a brand new label and we are looking forward to hearing what is to follow.

The Cooler Heads EP is available from all the usual spots, including Juno, from the 12th of May and on wax a couple of weeks later.

Wednesday

Featuring SUNKLOW

With a second release coming this week, things are looking pretty good for fledgling label, Sunklo. Perhaps it's not the anthemic output people have come to expect from Boddika and Joy Orbison but it is as strong, if not more so, than Froth/Mercy or Swims.

Dun Dun - Boddika & Joy O [forthcoming SUNKLO]

With Dun Dun/Prone, both tracks really are tight, crisp slices of straight up Techno, the A-side being a dancefloor friendly rhythmic affair and the flip being melodic and synth driven.

Prone - Boddika & Joy O [forthcoming SUNLKO]

This will only be available on vinyl and is a limited pressing so make sure you grab a copy via Rubadub or keep your eyes peeled for copies available later this week from all other outlets.

Tuesday

Featuring GREYMATTER

Over the last couple of years Wolf Music have gained themselves a reputation for consistently putting out top quality records. On the labels' 9th release Greymatter served up a slice of dark brooding house called 'Give It To Me Slow'. This excellent track has recently been given the remix treatment by quality house producers San Soda, Session Victim and Casino Times for the Wolf EP 012.

First up to bat is San Soda who tones down the synths in favour of a more focal jackin' bassline, right on the money. This is followed up by a Greymatter original, 'Tief'. 'Tief' is the kind of track that will make your hairs stand on end in a club, bringing a restrained agression and edge to the dancefloor atmosphere. The flip side first sees berlin duo Session Victim provide a stripped back rework, adding a jazz flavour with the help of ascending synth chords layered on top of a snippet of the original vocal sample. Casino Times wrap things up nicely. The first break down appears early on, a swirling fog of intertwined synth lines and echoed vocals builds up to tipping point before a weighty bassline forces it's way through the other side, the kind of drop that makes you grit your teeth in appreciation. You can check out the original and the four tracks off the new EP below.

Wolf EP 012 - Greymatter [Wolf Music]

All in all another very strong release from the boys over at Wolf Music, it seems they can do know wrong at the moment. If you aren't familiar with the label we'd really recommend you check out their back catalogue. Hit Juno to buy this release now.
