Review: ECHO FESTIVAL 2013

This year's Echo Festival was as unpredictable as it was enjoyable. The secluded site provided a place for festival goers to party hassle-free for the duration of the four nights of music. While there were a few mishaps, including a generator failure on Thursday, festivities carried on undeterred.

One of the Friday night highlights was hearing Redshape play an improvised live set of his own material. Hearing his version of Martyn's 'We Are You In The Future' recreated live was a an experience we'll not soon forget. Other highlights included Nick Höppner's sunrise set on Saturday night, which included various forms of 4/4 house and techno and spurred us on to party well into Sunday afternoon. Delano Smith's set of deeper house fare and Space Dimension Controller's singalong selections were similarly well received. Some quality tunes could also be heard on the beach throughout the afternoon, sets from Outboxx and Nick Rejam in particular stood out above the rest.

While the festival is only in it's second year, it is likely to gain momentum next year as people are sure to return for the intimate venue and experience. The convenience of the site that included the beach, stages, small bars, restaurants, supermarket, and accommodation is certainly a plus when you aren't looking to stray too far from the excitement. But of course, the best thing about Echo festival is the talent selection, and we will look forward to see who is on the bill for next year's event.

Midland - Placement Remixes EP

It has only been a month since we reviewed Midland's Placement EP and the guys at Aus Music already have the remix release ready to roll. As if we didn't already enjoy the original tracks by one of our favourite producers, Aus has enlisted Lone and Motor City Drum Ensemble to give two tracks the full remix treatment. It should come as no surprise that with two fantastic producers on board, the package does not disappoint.



The two track release will be available digitally and on wax from all good music retailers on the 30th of April, snag yourself a copy.

Various Artists - Vibe 2 [Future Times]

There has been both a proliferation of smaller start-up labels, especially in America, that are helping to fuel the revival of the 80's boogie sound and elements of classic house. Headquartered in the nation's capital, Future Times is a prime example; with a small group of internal artists releasing music under a variety of aliases (Beautiful Swimmers, Protect-U, Maximillion Dunbar, Rhythm Based Lovers) and gaining attention from across the disco-house sphere. Their music is a grab bag of disparate influences, and it can be easily heard in the wide-ranging Vibe 2 compilation, released in September 2011.

All 4 sides of the album offer completely different tracks each time, with little flow if listened to in order. Starting off with a scattered uneasy cut-up house jam from L.I.E.S. and Maximiilion Dunbar, we are assaulted with Tom Noble's 'Malaco', a slice of blown out analogue fuzz that sounds as if it were beamed from some Brooklyn basement in 1987. Alexis Le-Tan gives us some serious workout funk with 'Marathon Man', almost steel in its harsh drum grooves and military chant. On the other vinyl, Juju and Jordash's 'Musketache' is a lost brother of I:Cube's 'Falling'; both leisurely moving through a heavy synth space with 707's providing a background of low-slung beats. The always reliable Hunee gives us a good solid piece that is reminiscent of the previous 'Marathon Man' in its 909 and heavy breathing, but this track is more seductive in its approach.

Most of the pieces are moderate in tempo, but there are a few slower cuts on the compilation as well; Confused House delivers a DJ-tool esque drum machine jam, Steve Summers makes a contemplative synth piece more suited for home listening, and Swimmers & Gang gives us another 80's boogie edit to add to the slew of them (although it's still pretty fine). The star piece, however, goes to 'Volatile Memory', an ethereal work by Steve Moore with a drum loop hidden under layers of almost classical synth and distant choral accompaniment, with a lone high synth line rising up out of the ether in the latter half.

Overall, Vibe 2 is an excellent compilation from one of the better new American labels, and is a must-have for anyone who likes variation in their house/disco/whatever.

Gerry Read - Yeh Come Dance EP

This week sees a quality release from HH favourite and one of last years best newcomers. Here Gerry Read steps up for his debut release on Delsin, which also the marks the start of the Dutch label's venture down a more House orientated route.

Yeh Come Dance contains four cracking, unique tracks, each falling somewhere in the region of Berlin Techno and dingy basement House. The title track comes across as slightly off balance but this is completely intentional. It features a dark pulsing bassline, hard hitting drums, that repetitive, addictive vocal snippet (done in the Read way) plus some off kilter hi-hats which add great shuffle. It is definitely appropriate for this to be the title track as it stands out a mile off. 'Crawlspace' steps the heat down a notch and replaces the shuffle with a little swing. 'Bozza' switches it up, almost sounding like a live jazz interpretation, the end result is a fantastic composition which really boasts Read's musical abilities. 'Crooked' closes out the EP on a similar tip to 'Demolition Man', his recent collaboration with Kevin Mcphee.



Definitely an EP worth picking up on wax or digital, available right now from Juno.

Featuring SKUDGE

Stockholm's finest export Skudge are kicking off 2012 by posting previews to instalment five of the Skudge remix series. Techno heavyweight Cosmin TRG and godfather of the UK underground, Boddika, rework the 2011 releases 'Ursa Major' and 'Below' respectively.

Cosmin TRG expertly fits the sinister synth melody from 'Ursa Major' into a well constructed techno track. The moment the melody appears the track really steps up a level, unfortunately it only features once for a brief 30 seconds, would have loved to hear more of it.

Boddika puts his own indelible stamp on 'Below' with a characteristically acid laced bassline. Well timed use of the original vocal sample produces a hair raising breakdown, allowing for a climatic build up to a perfectly subdued drop. Both tracks will undoubtedly have dance floors pulsating over the coming months.

Unfortunately for the turntable-less amongst us the Skudge remix series is a strictly analogue affair. No release date as of yet so be sure to keep a close eye on their Facebook page for information on the upcoming release as well as tour dates.

George FitzGerald - Shackled EP

After starting his own label, Man Make Music, George FitzGerald is back with the Shackled EP for Scuba's Hotflush Recordings. The title track actually appeared recently on the Scuba: DJ Kicks album and gave us all a small preview of Fitzgerald's fifth release, his third on Hotflush.

For the EP, FitzGerald puts together three great tracks layered with sweeping pads, sharp keys and on point vocals snippets all bound together with his own brand of tight House beats.

This EP is not to be missed and is set for release the first week in December on Hotflush. It will be available from all good music retailers including Juno.

Sepalcure - Sepalcure LP

It feels like Sepalcure have been around for ages so it seems a little surprising that their self-titled album, forthcoming on Hotflush Recordings, is actually only their fifth release. It really only was in the summer of 2010 that Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma's debuted as Sepalcure and released the Love Pressure EP, seemingly from nowhere, blowing us all away. Together as Sepalcure and separately as Machinedrum and Braille, they have established themselves in the their native USA and here with releases on a variety of top labels including Planet Mu, Rush Hour, LuckyMe and of course Hotflush.

Since their debut we have seen the Fleur EP, the Love Pressure Remixed EP and most recently the Pencil Pimp LP Sampler all come out on Hotflush to great acclaim. These high quality releases really set the bar high and as you would expect there are high hopes for Sepalcure's debut album.

From the opening moment of 'Me' we are immediately treated to what we know as the trademark Sepalcure dance floor groover complete with a great swinging beat, smooth vocals and haunting synths. After that however, things do take a step forward in a really positive way as they explore and add other sounds and vibes to their music. The second track, "Pencil Pimp", is a perfect example of this, taking components from Classic House and Juke, including those choppy vocal hooks, and blending them with some more familiar, fairly haunting vocals, acoustic guitar and a really tight two step vibe.

After that their influences, highlighted with their own familiar style, bring the album to life and in a direction that is truly refreshing. You'll hear everything from chilled 808 vibes ("Eternally Yrs"), sun-drenched House ("See Me Feel Me"), Funky ("Hold On", "The One") and even some straight up Dubstep ("Yuh Na See") and everything in between as the exploration of the Sepalcure sound is fully expressed. In short, this is a great debut album and has enough depth and variety to warrant multiple listens.

The release date for Sepalcure is November 21st via Hotflush Recordings and is available on Vinyl, CD and digitally. Until then enjoy the flip from the sampler, 'I'm Alright' which was made available for free in the last week.

GoldFFinch - Red Mask EP

Next week sees the second release from GoldFFinch, Red Mask EP, hot on the heels of last weeks Dirtybird EP for Airflex Labs. Although this is only the second release from the Belgian duo it is highly anticipated after appearing on Jackmaster's Numbers show on RinseFM all summer.

The title track is a absolutely killer cut and infuses a little acid and electro into the mix to give the track a lot more depth and rhythm. The flip, "Ovale" is quite different however, obviously drawing on techno for its inspiration but in its most stripped back form and fused with some seriously sharp 808-styled beats.

Red Mask EP is set to be released on the 14th of November on vinyl and digitally on Numbers.

Ango - Another City Now EP

Another City Now is the debut EP from Ango aka Andrew Gordon Macpherson, the next big thing to step out of Monteal, Canada. Ango works closely with with other Candian producers Jacques Greene and Lunice, and has accompanied Jacques on his live European tour. His debut release came out on the 1st November on Scottish label Lucky Me.

This EP is a fusion of late 80’s pop, early 90’s house and contemporary R&B, which delivers a retro feel that’s fresh and vibrant. Ango is a writer and a producer and his 6 track EP is a lyrically polarised section of girl songs that express the way up and the way back down. This record is a fine balance of old and new, vintage but contemporary, upbeat but deep and delivers on every level.

Kidnap Kid - The Apocalypse of John EP

Matt Relton aka Kidnap Kid is a young producer originally from Sheffield but now residing in Leeds. Matt released his first EP The Great Confusion earlier this year and the eagerly awaited Apocalypse of John will be available from mid October at Juno. Matt joined up with the Sheffield based label Squeltch and Clap, who also boast releases from Tete De Tigre and CDBL earlier this year. The enthusiastic producer’s sound unashamedly ventures down the direction of other producers like Koreless and Jacques Greene, using soothing vocals alongside crisp and precise basslines to create a symphony of simple and well defined rhythms.

Kidnap Kid’s latest EP contains 3 original tracks and two remixes, one by B-Ju and the other by upcoming French producer 123Mrk. This EP is full of simplistic 2-step vibes that kick off exactly where his last release finished. ‘Shouldn’t Be Alone’ is probably the strongest song on the EP, ‘Taken’ and ‘Losing It’ give a chopped and distorted vibe, but ‘Shouldn’t Be Alone’ has a soothing, crisp vibe similar to his previous hit ‘No One Else’. The EP is full of beautiful vocals that work in unison with bouncing bass and rolling synths, creating a bubbly and energetic feel that would tear apart any club. 123Mrk’s remix of ‘Shouldn’t Be Alone’ brings another dimension with more of a Juke influence and B-Ju’s remix leaves a clean, synth infused track that juggles the vocals just nicely.



It seems that Kidnap Kid has not disappointed with his second release of the year, and hopefully will be able to keep the standards as high as this for future productions.

Featuring HOTFLUSH

There are not many labels around that have an artist roster that even comes close to Hotflush Recordings, run by Paul Rose aka Scuba/Spectr/SCB. With releases from Joy Orbison, Sepalcure, George Fitzgerald, Untold, Mount Kimbie and label boss Scuba - to name just a few - Hotflush has established itself solidly. During the rest of this year the label will continue its high quality output with new contributions from Paul Woolford & Psycatron and SCB - both scheduled for release on October 24th - plus a debut full-length album from Sepalcure in November.

Stolen - Paul Woolford & Psycatron [forthcoming Hotflush Two]


The collaboration of Paul Woolford & Pyscatron, who have had previous releases on Planet E and Intimacy, brings yet more Techno to the Hotflush Two label. The nine minute barrage of 'Stolen' is deep and intense and contrasts well with the funkier dub on the flipside.

Mace / Overlay - SCB [forthcoming SCB]


Next up is label boss Scuba and his first release for almost a year as SCB. 'Mace' and 'Overlay' have been doing the rounds in clubs all summer and continue Paul Rose's interest in Techno, which is huge in his new hometown of Berlin. Both tracks are well layered and intricate enough to please any Techno aficionado but retain the dancefloor quality that is the SCB trademark.



Lastly, the duo of Machinedrum and Braille with reunite once again in November for their self-titled debut album as Sepalcure. The ten track album will feature all new material and is assured to follow in the footsteps of their previous EPs, Love Pressure, Fleur and Love Pressure Remixed (all available now from Juno).

Pencil Pimp - Sepalcure [forthcoming Hotflush]


The album is scheduled for release November 22nd and will be preceeded by the single, Pencil Pimp on November 7th. Until then you can download the tracks 'Deep City Insects' and 'The Feeling That I Know So Well' for free via XLR8R.

Echo Park - Fiber Optic

Check out the latest release on Skream's Disfigured Dubz label from Echo Park. A proper electro-boogie selection with two remixes from Jon Convex and 12th Planet & Flinch.

The original mix is straight up baby making electro music with great vocals to accompany the 80's vibe. The 12th Planet & Flinch is quite forgettable but the Jon Convex remix is the one to watch for - taking the original down to its bones and giving the vocals a robotic, Barry White tip.

Highly recommended to those who enjoyed the Instra:mental release on this label. Available now from Juno.

Introducing VESSEL

Over the years Bristol has carved out a reputation for itself as being one of the most vibrant, creative and fluid hubs of the electronic music scene in the UK. The ‘forward looking and progressive’ Bristolian record label, A Future Without is helping to uphold this reputation by bringing ‘artists opportunities without compromising their integrity or freedom to express’.

It is this ethos that has enabled Vessel to produce the stunning Wax Dance EP.  The emerging  artist has already had a prolific year with releases on Left_Blank and Astro:dynamics and is now following in the footsteps of fellow Young Echo representatives Zhou and Khan by releasing his next EP with A Future Without - who have really championed the Young Echo collective over the last year, and with good cause, as a group they are arguably producing some of the most forward thinking and innovative electronic music in the UK scene.

All five tracks from Vessel's latest release have a dream-like quality to them, understated basslines combined with ethereal samples and distant synth echoes help produce the trance inducing sound that is the Wax Dance EP.  I can try my best but unfortunately no one describes the release more eloquently than Vessel himself, who tells us the EP is "an account of movement and physical twitches made by the motion of sound."

Featuring JULIO BASHMORE

Julio Bashmore takes front stage again as his hugely anticipated remixes of Deadboy's 'Heartbreaker' is set for Well Rounded Housing Project’s 3^rd release this October.

The Bristol born producer is about to bring in the end of summer on a high after an already very successful year. With an exclusive Radio One Essential Mix last weekend, plus two thumping remixes; one of Mosca’s 'Tilt Shift' on Fat City and of Christophe’s 'The Force' on Bristol's Futureboogie label, this release was going to make it 3^rd time a charm with both the freshness and originality which we have grown to love in Bashmore’s sound.

Deadboy’s original 'Heartbreaker' was released in 2009 on Well Rounded and is already well known as a solid gold midnight anthem so it must have been a tough act to follow, but we can see from Julio’s 2010 remix he twists the tones subtly, playing more on the cool, stylish, streetlight ambience created by the original. He matches, if not enhances, the night-time atmosphere by keeping in most of the original’s percussive sounds, including the funky cracked snares. However, the track holds its own deep Chicago House undertone with the new filled out disco baseline.

Heartbreaker (Julio Bashmore 2010/ 2009 Remix) – Deadboy


His 2009 remix is far more what we have learned to expect from Bashmore - he sends the track out from the cold moonlit streets and onto the dance floor. With the addition of an absorbing wooden block 2 step rhythm and some stunted vocals, the tune doubles up on itself with a smooth and padded wholeness. The deep cushioned baseline strikes a chord which excuse the pun can only be described as Well Rounded! Bring on the winter warmers!

Radiohead - TKOL RMX 1234567

The latest Radiohead album is collection of music which appeared on a series of seven releases that came out this summer on vinyl and lossless digital format. Each release contained a set of remixes from The King of Limbs, the bands eighth studio album which was released earlier in the year.

Radiohead - Lotus Flower (Jacques Greene Remix) [Ticker Tape LTD]

With the artists brought in on this project, the expectations are high and individually every track is a great rethought on the original. Highlights include remixes by Jacques Greene, Objekt, Four Tet, Jamie xx, Blawan and SBTRKT making this album accessible to fans across the spectrum of electronic music.

Radiohead - Lotus Flower (SBTRKT Remix) [Ticker Tape LTD]


The problem with a collection of music is just that, a collection without real flow or direction - unlike all of Radiohead's original material - and although individually all these tracks stand alone, they do not gel together as an album.

The rest of this album can be previewed on Radiohead's Soundcloud and the full release will be available from Juno on the 10th of October.

Rustie - Glass Swords LP

Rustie has been producing quality beats since 2007 and it is hard to believe that the London based producer is only just releasing his first LP. The album is being released by the prestigious Warp Records who have already released his single 'Ulta Thizz' earlier in September. Warp seems to be a fitting label for Rustie as his futuristic and experimental sound sits perfectly alongside label peers such as Hudson Mohawke and Flying Lotus.

Rustie will release the Glass Swords LP in early October and the hype surrounding this long awaited album suggests that it is going to be a huge. Apart from Hudson Mohawke’s Satin Panthers EP release earlier this year it is hard to remember something sounding so fresh and different. It takes guts to experiment so extremely, with a mixture of 80’s pop and contemporary rap templates fusing into a synergy of electronic genius. Rustie is producing an underground renaissance of progressive electronic music that is grasping the music world by storm.



There will be thirteen tracks on this album with each song giving its own razor-edged intensity that fluctuates throughout. The tracks create an energetic vibe of unorthodox glitches and micro samples that at times cross a fine line between being overcomplicated and frantic. However Rustie somehow manages to balance the hectic array of beats and warps them into an aesthetic cohesion.

The two most prolific tracks in the album have to be 'All Night' and 'Ultra Thizz' which both perfectly depict Rustie’s experimental direction in full effect. The first taste of the album 'All Night' gives a crisp and fun vibe that uses hip hop instrumentals fused with 80’s electro beats. Then we have 'Ultra Thizz' which is more of a futuristic journey of stadium style synths and chopped vocals. It seems that Rustie has broken from the mould and produced something that is not meant to fit into any category or set pattern. Trying to label this album into a genre would be pointless as it is a combination of various influences and this is one of the reasons why it gives off such a refreshing sensation.

Martyn - Ghost People LP

Washington DC based producer Martyn takes a step back to reflect in his new release Ghost People out on Brainfeeder. The LP gives off a jigsaw effect, pulling apart genres of music while delicately piecing together a mass of influences from all over the musical spectrum. The album itself is a masterpiece; ram packed with deep nostalgic notes while being filled to the brim with crunching dance floor bangers!

“My last album, 'Great Lengths,’ was very personal. A lot of the music and the themes behind it were taken out of my daily life: my sorrows and my melancholy. For this album, I chose things that are further away from me: the Ghost People theme. There are references to DJing in general. Not the jet-set DJ life, but the old Paradise Garage DJ life, where people want to share and play the music they really love, regardless of if it's trendy. Nothing fancy or flashy. Just back to the roots.”

The album progresses from track to track with sharp contrasts unlike any of Martyn’s releases prior; the track ‘Twice As’ for example holds itself in a 2 step garage rhythm, with snappy snips of snares and mysterious vocal cuts underlined with a deep and funky bassline. Whereas the track ‘Popgun’ couldn't be more different; the tune is hard-wired, industrial and the dirty broken beats stir up to a massively punchy climax. The track shows Martyn’s thoughtful intent on not making 2 dimensional tracks and displays his urge to push his musical creativity into new and unknown realms. This track is defiantly one to watch!!!

Mosca - The Wavey EP

2011 has been a big year for the Dutch label 3024, a joint enterprise between producer Martyn and designer Erosie, releasing EPs by the likes of Julio Bashmore, Addison Groove and Jon Convex. This momentum shows no sign of letting up with the promise of Mosca's upcoming The Wavey EP.

The announcement comes just two weeks after the release of 'Bax/Done Me Wrong' on Numbers. It is surprising that after more than 18 months of relative inactivity since his highly celebrated outing on Night Slugs the Square One EP, that Mosca would choose to deliver us two new releases in such quick succession. Hopefully this signals the dawn of a more productive period from the otherwise sparse yet highly lauded producer.

The Wavey EP steers away from the 90s garage vibe heard on his last release and finds itself firmly in darker house/techno territory.

The EP kicks off with 'Dom Perignon', a strong opening track with distant synth stabs reverberating through the fogs of rhythmic bass and stunted female vocals. 'Orange Jack' continues along a similar path but replaces the eerie female sample in favour of more prevalent hip hop orientated lyrics. The second half of the EP provides a more techno lined listening experience. 'Jager' will prove to be a particularly potent weapon in any DJ’s arsenal with its aggressive edge and relentless bassline. 'Wray’n Neph' wraps things up nicely with intoxicating low frequency waves and hypnotic melodies. All in all, a very strong release from the London based producer.

Lando Kal - Maneuver EP

As one half of Lazersword, San Francisco native Lando Kal turned quite a few heads. Now based in Berlin, his solo releases have shown a very different side to his musical style.

Since his split Golden Handshake EP with his Lazersword partner Low Limit on Numbers, Lando Kal impressed with his release for the legendary Hotflush Recordings. 'Further', the stand out track from that release, saw him flex his house and 2-step muscles in a way that blends perfectly into the Hotflush sound.

On remix duty Lando Kal has impressed this summer with remixes of 'Liiines' by Ghostpoet and 'Love Pressure' by Sepalcure. Earlier this month his remix of 'Rhythm of the Night' surfaced and saw it released as the first from the vinyl-only Stillcold white label series (still available at Juno).

Maneuver – Lando Kal [Rush Hour]


Lando Kal's newest release is 'Maneuver' b/w 'Run It', two tracks that are sure to cement his place in the bass music world. 'Run It' is a straight up electro infused cracker but 'Maneuver' is the real eye-catcher here with skipping house beats, rave anthem synths and pulsating subs to keep your feet moving.

Maneuver will be out by the end of this month on Dutch label Rush Hour as part of their Direct Current series and will be available for purchase at Juno Records.

Scuba - Adrenalin EP

The latest EP from the man known to his mother as Paul Rose marks the latest in an ever-evolving succession of stylistic manoeuvres that have seen the Hotflush godfather effortlessly glide along the perimeter of the hardcore continuum. From his heady, sub-heavy early output (A Mutual Antipathy [2008]) to the slightly more percussive, UK funky-influenced moodiness of his sophomore opus (last year's highly-lauded Triangulation) via chunky teutonic techno excursions under the SCB alias, as well as the hands-in-the-air house with his Loss EP on Will Saul's Aus Music imprint - it's clear he's a man of many names and even more talents. Let's not forget the brash, belligerent 'Dance 4 Me' as Spectr on RKS.

For the Adrenalin EP he chooses to return to the aquatic guise under which he made his name (or one of them, anyway) although those expecting a similar return to the days of yore in terms of musical content may find themselves somewhat surprised. Scuba goes back alright. Way back. Before dubstep, before garage, maybe even before house. What you're listening to is pop music, plain and simple. And I for one am certainly not complaining.

The title track opens with the gentle pitter of vinyl crackle and pounding 707 kicks (okay, so maybe it's house music actually) as Rose gently lifts the filter on a myriad of vocal snatches. By the time that analog bassline surfaces we're firmly into fist-pumping territory. MDMA-drenched strings slowly rise along with a faceless diva's utterance of, what at least sounds like, “adrenaline”, leading to the mother of all breakdowns. That ubiquitous bassline returns after the drop, sounding a little underwhelming given the previous fanfare, but brilliant all the same.

Second cut 'Everywhere' is definitely the most pop-conscious of the three – synth stabs straight out of the GTA: Vice City soundtrack and a seriously jacking bassline joining with yet more uplifting vocals, saying things like “come on feel it” and “feel the power” - cheesy but in a good way. 'Never' is my personal favourite of the three, combining the 80s aesthetic of 'Everywhere' with the euphoria of the title track, especially around the 2-minute mark as the ferocious breakbeat meets the heart-rending string sequence. The aggregation of dancefloor potency and emotion in this particular track points to the likes of Art of Noise or New Order circa Technique.

It almost seems that having properly settled into his new home of Berlin, Paul Rose has stopped spending so much time in the big frightening downstairs room of that former Kreuzberg power station and perhaps decided to take a trip upstairs. And stayed there until Sunday afternoon when the shutters are up and the sun is shining. And then went home and wrote an EP based on this experience.
